Windows 10 is currently the major OS used on most of the computers and laptops today, the 2nd being MacOS. Windows 10 was a great success and have been using it quite a lot since then. As a result, people have also encountered some bugs and glitches too.
Nevertheless, Windows 10 has got frequent updates for that. But what if you are not getting them?
There could be 2 possibilities. Either you have turned off auto updates or you have not connected your PC to the internet for a while. You can fix that pretty easily.
Windows 10 Update Fix
To do so, head to the Settings from the Start menu and go to Network and Internet. Now check if you have any connections available. And if yes, connect and proceed further.
Similarly, you can go to Update and Security and click on Check for Updates. You should get a prompt asking you to Update if updates are available.
The Real Problem
Now let’s come to the fun part. Many Windows 10 users have reported that their PC lags or doesn’t run smoothly. 2 things can be causing this.
A) You don’t have good hardware (RAM, Graphic Cards, HDDs etc.) B) You have got some settings wrong.
If it is due to problem A, you should upgrade some hardware. If A has got a check mark and still your Windows 10 doesn’t run smoothly, you might need to fix error B. Hmm…
Either way you can definitely try out fixing problem B and oh boy, will your PC run faster! Let’s get right into it!
Windows 10 Performance Fix
Ask yourself a question. Have you ever cleaned your PC? Organised files? Deleted junk? Changes Settings? Used Performance Softwares? etc. etc. or you just have been using it without doing any of these?
If it is the latter, then you might need to do some fixes. First we will try to clean all the junk files you do not need to make your Windows 10 run faster.
Clear Junk on Windows 10
We will try to delete as many junk files, apps and media as possible to get some space freed up because it will eventually increase our PC’s performance. Cleaning all these junk files will result in giving you some extra space on your PC and also making your Windows 10 experience smoother.

1) Delete Useless Files From Drives
Check out all of your HDDs or SDDs and see if you can free some space by deleting useless files or media. Check all the folders to find hidden stuff that is either useless or doesn’t work. If you can clear some space, that would be a great start.
Don’t worry if you don’t have any junk there. I will help you find it!
2) Delete Temporary Files
You can easily find all those files you do not need. Hit Windows+R and you will see the Run box.
Type in %temp% and hit enter. You will see a folder with some (or a lots of) files.
These are temporary files which were created for one time use (just like a OTP) and left there without any use. Hit Ctrl+A and delete all of them. I accumulated 20 files just in a week!
This will free up some storage and add to the smooth experience of the lovely Windows 10.
3) Use Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup can be used to automatically free space on your Drives easily. Also, this would free some space and make your Windows 10 performance smoother.
First of all, right-click on any drive from ‘My Computer’ and go to ‘Properties’. You will see a little ‘Disk Cleanup’ button. Click on it.
Then click ‘OK’ in the other window that pops up. Now your PC would perform the disk cleanup function and will clean any junk or harmful files.
Disk Cleanup is a computer maintenance utility included in Microsoft Windows designed to free up disk space on a computer’s hard drive.
The utility first searches and analyzes the hard drive for files that are no longer of any use, and then removes the unnecessary files. – Wikipedia
4) Optimize Your Drives
You can also optimize your drives to run faster and smoother to enhance your Windows 10 performance by defragmenting them. To do so, again go to the ‘Properties’ of your drive and open the ‘Tools’ tab.
Click on ‘Optimize’ and a new window would pop up.
Choose the drive you want to optimize by defragmenting it and click on ‘Optimize’.
This might take some time but after the drive is defragmented, it will run smoothly and handle tasks easily.
NOTE: Do not do this with any SSDs as it may cause problems.
Conventional logic dictates that you should never defrag an SSD, because the SSD controller writes data in a scattershot-fashion to multiple NAND chips and locations, using algorithms that only the controller understands. The operating system sees it as a hard drive with sectors, but the data is spread all over the drive by the controller.
Defragging these “sectors” is like trying to assemble a jigsaw puzzle blindfolded: You can feel parts of the pattern, but you can’t see the whole picture. In addition, NAND is good for only a few thousand write cycles, so defragging can reduce the SSD’s lifespan by unnecessarily writing data to it. – PC World

5) Delete unnecessary applications
Deleting apps that you do not use is a good step because it can clean a lot of space from your PC and overall improving its performance. We all download apps on our PC’s and some of them turn out to be useless, and we forget about them. Forget that they are taking up space in our PC’s. So we need to delete them.
To do so, go to ‘Settings’ and the click on ‘Apps’. Go through all the apps and check whether you need them or not and if it is the latter, delete them on your way. This would free up a lot of space. I freed up 9GBs just by deleting apps!
6) Use CCleaner (Optional)
You can use CCleaner to clean some more junk files which you may not be able find yourself. To do so, you need to first download CCleaner. After that, install it by following the wizard, Harry. Haha.
Then, you can click on the ‘Analyze’ button on the main screen. After it has done Analyzing the files, you can either have a look on them or directly start the cleaning process by clicking on ‘Run Cleaner’.
This would definitely free up a lot of space and help improve your Windows 10 performance.
CCleaner, developed by Piriform, is a utility program used to clean potentially unwanted files and invalid Windows Registry entries from a computer. CCleaner has been reviewed by Chip.de, TechRadar, PC Magazine, and TechRepublic. – Wikipedia

Settings on Windows 10
Now we will try to enhance our Windows 10 performance by changing some settings to make it run faster and smoother. We will make small tweaks to the settings which would speed up our PC.
First we will go through and change some system settings by going into Settings>System Settings. These setting would increase FPS on our PC Applications and would make batteries on Laptop last longer.
Change Scale & Layout and Resolution to the Recommended Setting. By doing so, you will be using the setting which is best for your PC. Keep orientation as landscape (well obviously!)
8) Notifications & Actions
Change notification settings as per your preference but try to turn off as many as possible. Keep the “Get notifications from apps and other sender” on so that you keep receiving notifications.
Whether you want them to be shown on Lock Screen or not is completely your choice, but I would prefer not to, for increasing the performance.
9) Power & Sleep
Change the Screen and Sleep settings when on battery or charge (laptops) as per your preference. I would recommend you to turn the screen off after 2 mins when on battery.
Avoid using the sleep feature because it can interrupt any installation which is going on.

24) Task Manager
While using applications or playing games, they are not prioritized by your PC. To make your Windows 10 PC do so, you need to use the task manager.
Whenever you are working on that application or playing that game, just go to the Task Manager>Details and right-click on that application.
Click on Set Priority and change it as per your preferences. This would make Windows 10 prioritize the app you have chosen first than any other.
NOTE: Do not use this while multitasking.
Visual Effects Settings
Windows 10 uses a lot of visual effects and animation to make it look cool and smooth and slippery, but of what use are they if they are making your PC respond slower.
You can easily fix this by turning off some of these visual effects and animations.
25) Turn off Visual Effects
Open My PC > Computer > Properties. Then click on advanced system settings. Under Performance, click on Settings… and choose “Adjust for best performance”
Then click Apply and OK. This would reduce some visual effects and increase performance.
NOTE: Choose “Smooth Edges of Screen Front” for better readability.
26) Turn off Transparency (Optional)
Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors and turn transparency effects off. This would give you some more memory and better performance.
Disable Startup Applications
Applications that just pop up after booting up your PC take a lot of memory and reduce your Windows 10 performance. These apps are also annoying and start-up every time the PC boots up.
Luckily this can be fixed using task manager, again.
Go to Task Manager > Startup and disable the apps you do not want to start-up when your PC is booted up.
Malware and Viruses could be lagging your PC and might be resulting to poor performance. Scan your PC weekly for viruses and malware and remove them immediately if they are found.
This can be easily done by Windows Defender by going into Windows Defender > Virus & Threat Protection and click on either Quick Scan or Advanced Scan.
